National Pollutant Inventory

Introduction

This page is prepared by the Latrobe Region Power Generation Industry1 as part of their reporting obligations and supported by Paperlinx-Maryvale Mill.

The National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) is a national database established by Environment Australia to provide information on the emission of certain substances (pollutants) to the environment.

The database is available via the Internet and is designed to provide information to the community, industry and government.

The companies involved in the Latrobe Valley Power Industry have collectively agreed to report their emissions under the provisions of the NPI through this page. The same report will appear in the NPI Database.

National Pollutant Inventory

Full details on the NPI are not shown on this page. The following hotlinks will take you to excellent information sources.

Then select the Air section and National Pollutant Inventory section.

Environment Protection Agency of Victoria

See the NPI section at http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/npi/

This extensive Website carries many details pertaining to the NPI and has a good description of each pollutant.

Emissions to Air from Power Stations

The following table gives the name of Pollutants that may be emitted into the air by power stations.

Not all of these pollutants are reported by Latrobe Valley Power Stations as they are either not present in the emission or are at a level below the threshold for reporting.

Substance Abbreviation or Symbol Usual form of Emission

Arsenic As As Oxide
Beryllium and its Compounds Be As Oxide or Compound
Cadmium and its Compounds Cd As Oxide or Compound
Chromium and its compounds (reported separately as CrIII and CrIV) Cr As Oxide or Compound
Copper and its Compounds Cu As Oxide or Compound
Magnesium and its Compounds Mg Usually as Oxide fume
Fluorine (usually as HF) HF As fluoride or as gas/mist
Hydrochloric Acid HCl As HCl gas or acid mist
Lead and its compounds Pb As Oxide or Compound
Mercury and its compounds Hg As Oxide or Compound
Nickel and its compounds Ni As Oxide or Compound
Sulphur Dioxide SO2 As gas
Carbon Monoxide CO As gas
Dioxins (Polychlorinated dioxins/furans) PCC As gas or vapour
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons PAH As gas or vapour
Volatile organic compounds VOC As gas or vapour
Oxides of Nitrogen NOx As gas
Particulate Matter (less than 10 micron) PM10 Dusts or Fume

Emissions in the NPI Data base are shown as Kilogram (Kg) of Pollutant emitted in a calendar year.
