The future of brown coal

Brown coal, because of its abundance and accessibility, will continue to be an attractive energy source for some time to come.

New ways of harnessing our energy needs will be required if we are to meet the evolving governments and community standards for cleaner forms of electricity production.

New brown coal technology will be one of the essential elements of Australia moving to a lower emissions future.

Latrobe Valley generators are actively involved in a range of greenhouse gas abatement measures including:

  • Improving the efficiency of existing power stations;
  • Supporting research and development into low emissions brown coal power generation technology; and
  • Investigations into converting brown coal to liquids, gas, and fertiliser.
